Discovering a unique site in Europe: the valley of the temples, Unesco heritage”
The Valley of the Temples
The Valley of the Temples of Agrigento is the greatest archaeological site in the world dating from the Hellenic period. The park stretches about 1300 hectares and features the exceptional state of preservation. It contains the remains of 10 Doric temples, three sanctuaries, several necropolis and fortifications. Since 1997 he is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The birth of the polis Agrigento is related to the development of the polis Gela: the city,in fact, it was founded in 581 BC by some population of Gela, with the name of Akragasfrom the homonymous river that runs through the territory. However,as it grew more and more successful, so did its rivalries with other Greek colonies, especially that of Siracusa. After a relatively peaceful (if undistinguished period), Akagras was thrown into the First Punic War (264 BC) on the side of the Carthaginians and defeated by the Romans in 210 BC.
